Stephen Alan Roberts, 72 died Tuesday, May 12, 2020 while vacationing at the beach. Steve is survived by his wife Joan Roberts of 53 years and his son Stephen Alan Roberts II.

Steve was a gifted mechanic at the early age of 11. His Dad owned Mower Equipment and Steve was on duty early. The true plus was that Steve could fix any engine. He rebuilt the engine of his infamous 1961 Ford and the VW Bug which required Metric tools and an instruction book.

Steve graduated from Harding High School in 1965. His classmates remain connected and united. Steve graduated from CPCC in 1968 and UNCC in 1970 with a BA degree in History. Steve was a born soldier, he joined the Army in 1970; he served the 1st Calvary Division at Bien Hoa Army Base Vietnam from 12/71-6/29/72 when the 3BDE Departed Vietnam. Steve was a Pfc. When he went to Vietnam and returned a Sgt. He was honored at Ft. Riley, Kansas serving 2nd Brigade as Trooper of the Month. Steve was chosen as a cordon for the burial of President Harry S. Truman on 12/28/72 in Independence, Missouri.

Steve joined the Army Reserves when he returned from the Army in November 1973; he also worked for the Army Reserves in Charlotte until he became disabled in 1993.

Steve was a Scout Master for Troop 77 (1970-76). Steve earned the honored Wood Badge for his advanced training as a Scout Master.

Steve and Joan married 10/14/67. They were very young; their love grew with each year. They were blessed with the birth of their son Stephen Alan Roberts II in August of 1980. Alan was the light of their life. Steve was so proud of this wonderful, bright, endearing young man.

Steve loved HISTORY. He was active in re-enactments of various periods of history. He made many of his uniforms and was specific that all his gear was authentic to the period he was portraying. He had an extensive library to research. He leaves many wonderful re-enacting friends with fond memories of campfires and field trips.

Steve was a member of the Company of Military Historians, the Civil War Round Table, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Daughters of the Confederacy, Fraternal Order of Police, and a Life time member of the American Legion.

Steve was an avid historian. His mind was filled with stories of the past. He visited every fort, battlefield and museum he could, sometimes more than once.

He leaves a large legacy of friends and knowledge and he will be missed.

Steve was born on September 10, 1947 the son of Marion Lafayette Roberts and Lula Roberts in Charlotte, NC. He is survived by his sister Eleanor Roberts Fowler (George) of Pineville, NC. Steve was preceded in death by his sister Patricia Roberts Stephens (Glenn) in 2017. Steve is also survived by many special nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the animal care organization “Lennie’s Kids” (Lennieskids.org) as Steve was an avid animal lover.

Arrangements for Steve’s memorial service are still pending due to the restrictions of COVID-19. A traditional Memorial service with military honors will be announced at a later date.  A complete obituary and arrangements will be available online at carolinamortuary.com.
