James Monroe Barnhill (Jim), age 81, entered his heavenly home on Saturday, July 4, 2020 where he was greeted by his loving wife of 54 years.
Born in Gaston County on August 11, 1938 he was the son of the late Floyd and Grace Phillips Barnhill. Jim was a servant to God and a lifelong member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Lowell: where he previously served as member of the Deacon Fellowship, taught RA’s, taxied the Young at Heart and a member of the adult choir. Jim's love for singing and music lead him to be the minister of music at several churches in Gaston County.
Jim worked at Pharr Yarns and was a member of the Pharr Yarn Reds softball team that won the 1963 ASA Industrial Men’s Major Slow Pitch Nationals in Providence, RI. After leaving there Jim went to work for his dad delivering coal, then his dad started Barnhill Sanitation in which he ran before he took over ownership in 1997 when his dad passed away.
A major stroke in 2006 paralyzed his right side and left Jim unable to pronounce words clearly but he never asked why or complained. He always praised God and was a wonderful testimony to many others. Jim is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Brenda Barnhill.
Left to cherish his memories are his three children; Angie Frye, Beth Greene (Kevin), Tim Barnhill (Lisa); sisters, Maude Dugan (John), Nelda Malinowski (Thad); brother, Bill Barnhill (Patsy); grandchildren, Ryan Taylor, Mandy Whitaker (JD), Heather Baucom and Hanson Barnhill; great grandchildren, Colby Morgenstern, Easton and Jaxon Whitaker. Logan and Quinlan Dean, who also called him pawpaw.
A memorial service will be held at a later date due to current situation in the world.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, 258 E. Garrison Blvd. Gastonia, NC 28054 or Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1110 N. Main Street Lowell, NC 28098.
