Harry Phillips Jr.

November 9, 1930 — April 13, 2022

Mooresville, North Carolina

Harry Linton Phillips Jr. passed peacefully into God’s hands on April 12, 2022. Harry was born November 9, 1930, in Shawnee, Oklahoma to the late Harry Linton Phillips Sr. and Christine Hansen Phillips. Harry Jr. had one sibling, younger sister Jacky Potter, who also passed from this earth last August. When “Junior” was 11 years old the family moved from Oklahoma to New England and, ultimately, South Portland, Maine where he then spent his formative years. In 1953 he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maine where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

Shortly thereafter, Harry served in the U.S Army, and subsequently met his future wife, Norma Jean Mankin, a nursing student, from Beckley, West Virginia. They were married on Harry’s birthday in 1957 and enjoyed 59 years together until her passing in August of 2017.

Harry’s lengthy career with Union Carbide Corporation took the family to Buffalo, New York; Highland Park, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Throughout his dedicated time with UCC he fulfilled many roles in engineering, sales, and operations.

Late in Harry’s career he and Jean moved to Fairhope, Alabama when his business unit was acquired by Taylor-Wharton; he retired in 1995. Harry and Jean enjoyed over 27 years residing in Fairhope where they were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Baldwin Senior Travelers. In March of 2021 Harry moved to Mooresville, North Carolina to be closer to family.

Harry enjoyed woodworking, sailing, traveling, and fishing throughout his life. He also loved music, especially Big Band, juke boxes, and player pianos. He and Jean enjoyed lengthy visits to their cottage on the family farm in Lester, West Virginia. Harry relished a good martini or glass of red wine with family and friends. He also loved to play cribbage and hearts with his beloved family.

Harry and Jean are survived by their five children Bruce Phillips (Kim) of Denver, North Carolina; Brian Phillips (Britt) of Sherborn, Massachusetts, Sue Palmer (Jim) of Summerfield, North Carolina, Jennifer Phillips (fiancé Brian Hughes) of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Mark Phillips (Sara) of Westfield, Indiana, eleven grandchildren Chelsea Phillips, Nicholas Phillips (Jenna), Parker Phillips, Sven Phillips, Jensine Phillips, Kyle Palmer, Garrett Palmer, Jonathan Phillips, JoHanna Phillips, Jenna Phillips, Frank Phillips and a great granddaughter Harper Phillips.

A celebration of Harry’s life will be held April 30, 2022, at 3:30 PM at Lake Forest Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. The family would like to sincerely thank Harry’s friends and neighbors in Fairhope and Lester for being his “family” when there, the wonderful staff at Cadence Mooresville, and Hospice of Lake Norman. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Kidney Fund at www.kidneyfund.org or the charity or your choice.
