Clarence H. Wooding, Jr. was born on September 11, 1955 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Inez R. and Clarence H. Wooding, Sr. He passed quietly in his sleep on October 5, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Clarence graduated in 1974 from Patrick Henry High School, Roanoke, Virginia. He enlisted in the US Air Force in May 1978. As part of the Air Force Security Forces, he defended some of the nation’s most vital resources during tours in Guam, Japan and Panama.
Post-military, Clarence returned to Roanoke where he spent more than a decade working at the Kroger Distribution Center.
Clarence moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2008 to be close to his mother and began a new career. He retired from the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) that maintained the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He concluded his work career doing what he enjoyed — connecting with people — as a bus driver for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). Quietly, Clarence went out of his way to help his riders, routinely the homeless and hungry.
Clarence’s loving-kindness extended to his neighbors and co-workers. He was a furious competitor, whether on a pool table or on the chess board, he was a strong-minded rival. To say Clarence was a huge Washington [Redskins] Commanders fan would be an understatement — he loved the Burgundy & Gold. He got great joy watching his team play and talking football with his late Aunt Dorothy [Dot] and Uncle Robert Martin.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and sister ReElla “Pat” Morgan.
Clarence is survived by his aunts Louise Stevenson of Washington DC, Arlene Small (Sonny) of Roanoke VA, Nancy Reynolds of Miami FL; three brothers, Corbin Wooding (Gloria) of Hinesville GA; Barry Wooding (Linda) of San Antonio TX; Anthony Wooding (Lorna) of The Villages FL; his nieces Tanya Morgan of Henderson NV, Patrice Bryant (Quinton) of Charlotte NC, Jackelyn “Niky” Wooding of Austin TX, Jennifer Wooding of Georgetown TX; his nephews Joffery Smith (Vashati) of Hinesville GA, Corbin Wooding Jr. of Denver CO, Montrell Corley of Charlotte NC; his special-bond cousin Shelby “Toots” Campbell of Bloomfield CT; and numerous other cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces, and friends.
